چکیده

This paper is a report of some experiments on the effect of heat upon organisms which have been exposed to fluorite rays. The experiments have yielded valuable information concerning the mechanism of the action of rays. They show that the exposed organisms (P.aramecium caudatum) are made extremely sensitive to the influence of heat. The experiments are of interest because they show the necessity of a careful control of the temperature of the radiated organisms both during and after the radiation. Heretofore investigators have paid but little, if any, attention to temperature control in their radiation experiments. They have, perhaps, considered the matter unimportant, since the rate of most photochemical reactions is independent of temperature. The effect of heat upon the organism which has been made sensitive to heat by radiation must be clearly distinguished from its effect upon the specific photochemical reaction, for in the former case the effect is upon a series of reactions initiated by the exposure and not upon the photochemical change itself. The heat sensitization resulting from radiation appears to be of general occurrence. I t has been found in Laminaria exposed to the rays from radium emanation 1 and in egg white exposed to the rays from a quartz mercury-vapor lamp. 2 In the case of the heatsensitized egg white visible coagulation occurs at a lower temperature than in the non-radiated control. The degree of sensitization increases with the amount of radiation so that with sufficient expo-

The Action Spectrum of Sensitization to Heat with Ultraviolet Light

1. Heat does not sensitize paramecia to ultraviolet light but ultraviolet light sensitizes them to heat. Paramecia of two species (Paramecium caudatum and P. multimicronucleate) are much more readily killed by heat at 42.3 degrees C. if they are first exposed to ultraviolet light. 2. From studies on paramecia irradiated with a given dosage at various wave lengths before being killed by heat, an...

Can Light Emitted from Smartphone Screens and Taking Selfies Cause Premature Aging and Wrinkles?

Since the early days of human life on the Earth, our skin has been exposed to different levels of light. Recently, due to inevitable consequences of modern life, humans are not exposed to adequate levels of natural light during the day but they are overexposed to relatively high levels of artificial light at night. Skin is a major target of oxidative stress and the link between aging and oxidat...

Exposure to Visible Light Emitted from Smartphones and Tablets Increases the Proliferation of Staphylococcus aureus: Can this be Linked to Acne?

Background: Due to rapid advances in modern technologies such as telecommunication technology, the world has witnessed an exponential growth in the use of digital handheld devices (e.g. smartphones and tablets). This drastic growth has resulted in increased global concerns about the safety of these devices. Smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other digital screens emit high levels of short-wav...

Exposure to radiofrequency wave (RFW) generated by a base transceiver stations (BTS) antenna model affects learning and memory in female more than male rats

Background: Exposure to electromagnetic radiation may impair memory. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of radiofrequency wave (hereafter referred to as RFW) on passive avoidance learning and memory in healthy males and females. Materials and Methods: Ten adult male and ten female Sprague-Dawley rats (230±20 gr) were randomly divided into four groups including two control groups (o...

DETERIORATION OF PITTING CORROSION OF 316 STAINLESS STEEL BY SENSITIZATION HEAT TREATMENT

In this research pitting Corrosion of a sensitized 316 stainless steel was investigated employing potentiodynamic, potentiostatic techniques. Sensitization process was carried out on as-received alloy by submitting the specimen in electric furnace set at 650°Cfor five hours and then the specimen was quenched 25°C water. Potentiodynamic polarization of as received and sensitized specimens in 1M ...
